A figure in a wool coat on a quiet autumn street
Since 1984

Our story

Two makers, one small room, and a stubborn idea about how clothes should be made.

The house

Halden & Roe began in 1984 on a bench at the back of a Portland tailoring shop, with a single order for a wool coat and no intention of becoming a label. Forty years on we are still that size on purpose: a studio, not a factory.

Redefining slow

The work is the point

We cut in runs of a few dozen, which means a piece can take a season to reach you and sometimes sells out before it is photographed. We have made peace with that. Small numbers let us choose better cloth, pay our makers properly, and stand behind every seam. When something wears through, send it back and we will mend it.

Redefining honest

Cloth you can trace

Every fabric we buy can be traced to the mill that wove it, most of them family-run and within a day’s drive of a port. Wool from the Yorkshire dales, linen from Belgium, silk from a mill our founder has visited three times. If we cannot learn how a cloth was made, we do not cut it. It is a slower way to build a rail, and the only one we know.

Fashion fades, style endures. We would rather make one honest coat than ten forgettable ones.
