If a line shows up mostly when your face moves, a wrinkle relaxer is usually the better starting point. If the line or hollow is there even when your face is completely still, the cause is usually lost volume, and filler tends to help more. Many faces benefit from a little of both.
Start with a mirror test
Sit in even daylight and relax your face completely. Then frown, raise your brows and smile widely. Lines that appear only during movement are dynamic lines, created by muscles folding the skin. Lines, folds or shadows that stay put at rest are static, and they usually point to thinning skin, shifting fat pads or bone changes.
This is the same check your injector does at consultation, just with better lighting and a trained eye. It helps you arrive with clearer questions and a sense of what a first plan might look like.
What each treatment actually does
| Wrinkle relaxers | Dermal fillers | |
|---|---|---|
| Works on | Muscle movement | Volume and structure |
| Best for | Frown lines, forehead, crow's feet | Lips, cheeks, under-eyes, jawline |
| Visible change | 3 to 14 days | Same day, settles by 2 weeks |
| Typical longevity | 3 to 4 months | 6 to 18 months by area |
Good plans start with how your face moves, not with a product name.
When a combined plan makes sense
Deep frown lines are a good example. Relaxing the muscle stops the fold from getting deeper, while a tiny amount of soft filler can lift an etched crease that has been there for years. Your provider may stage the two treatments a couple of weeks apart so each result can be judged on its own.
Frequently asked
Yes. Many clients begin with the treatment that addresses their main concern and add the other later if it would help.
Filler generally lasts longer than a wrinkle relaxer, but longevity depends on the area and product. Results vary.
Both can look natural when dosed conservatively. The skill is in the plan, not the product.
