About the firm
An employment firm for employees, in Evanston.
Ellis Marrable founded the firm to represent people at work, and Frances Teale leads its employee-side practice. Both began their careers defending employers; the firm now represents only individuals, employees and workers in Evanston and nearby communities.
Where we began
From the defense table to the employee’s side.
Ellis Marrable and Frances Teale both started out at management-side firms, defending companies in discrimination and wage and hour cases and advising them on how to handle hard employment decisions. Over time they found they wanted to be on the other side of those decisions. Ellis opened Marrable Law to represent people at work, and Frances joined to lead its employee-side practice. The firm now represents only individuals, employees and workers.
Employment law matters because work shapes so much of a life: income, health coverage, routine, identity. We keep the firm small so the attorney who hears your story is the one who handles your matter, and we explain every option in plain language so the decisions stay yours. Early advice often prevents a bigger problem, which is why we make the first conversation easy to have.

How we practice
Three things you can count on.
One attorney, first call to last
When you call Marrable Law, you speak with the attorney who will handle your matter. The person you meet on the first call stays with it to the end.
A fee structure that fits
Contingency, hybrid, flat fee or hourly, whichever suits the matter, explained before any work begins and agreed in writing.
Plain language, no judgment
Frances listens to the whole account first, then lays out your options in plain language, so you can make the decision that fits your life and career.
Her background, in plain terms.
- 01
Practice focus
Employee-side employment law only: discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, harassment, wage and hour, severance review and negotiation, and Title IX and sexual misconduct in education.
- 02
Past employment
A management-side firm, defending employers in individual and group wage and hour and discrimination cases and advising them on discipline, leave and terminations. Then Marrable Law, to lead the firm’s employee-side practice.
- 03
Wage and hour litigation
Unpaid overtime, off-the-clock work and misclassification claims, for individuals and for groups of coworkers, including collective and class actions.
- 04
Other matters
Education matters for students and families, and contract disputes for individual clients.
- 05
Pro bono
Evening workers’ rights clinics; orders of protection; name changes; record sealing.
- 06
How she works
Direct and thorough. Clients speak with Frances herself, from the first call through the end of the matter, and every option is explained in plain language.
- 07
Where she practices
Evanston and nearby communities, plus federal wage and hour cases. Fee structures: contingency, hybrid, flat fee and hourly, depending on the nature of the case.

Pro bono
Pro bono work we always make time for.
Workers’ rights clinics
Evening clinics where workers can ask questions about pay, leave, discipline and firing, and leave with a clear sense of their options and the deadlines that apply.
Orders of protection
Representing people who need a court order to keep them safe from abuse or harassment by a family or household member, a process that often moves quickly and under stress.
Name changes
Guiding people through the court process to change their legal name, and the paperwork that follows.
Criminal record expungements
Helping people clear eligible arrest and court records, so an old case no longer stands between them and a job, a lease or a license.
In her words
Whatever happened at work, once you are my client, I am in your corner.
