The week after a peel
By Mara Ellison, NP · August 21, 2026

After a medium-depth chemical peel, expect tightness on day one, visible flaking from about day two or three, and fresh, even skin by day seven. Light peels often cause no visible peeling at all. The most important rules are simple: do not pick, keep moisturized and wear mineral sunscreen every day.
| Day | What you will notice | Care |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pink, warm and tight, like a mild sunburn | Gentle cleanser, barrier cream, no actives |
| 2 to 3 | Tightness, first flaking around the mouth | Moisturize often; do not pick |
| 4 to 5 | The most visible peeling, often on the cheeks | Trim loose flakes with clean scissors only |
| 6 to 7 | Peeling settles; skin looks fresh and even | Resume makeup; keep sunscreen daily |
The flaking is not the result. It is the week before the result.
What to avoid
- Saunas, hot yoga and hard workouts for 48 hours.
- Scrubs, retinoids and acids until your skin is fully settled.
- Picking or pulling at peeling skin, which can leave marks.
Questions
What if I do not peel at all?
That is common with light peels and does not mean it did not work. The exfoliation happens at a microscopic level.
When should I call you?
If you notice blistering, crusting, or pain that is getting worse rather than better, message the nurse line the same day.
