Where the pockets are deep, a deep cleaning and root planing clears the bacteria and hardened deposits below the gumline that an ordinary cleaning cannot reach. It is done gently, with numbing where you want it, and usually across a couple of comfortable visits rather than one long one.

The bacteria that drive gum disease return within about ninety days of a cleaning, which is why a maintenance interval matters more than any single visit.
