Firm Chair

Martin Ellery

Office
Columbus, Ohio
Social

Martin leads the firm and its commercial litigation group. He represents Ohio manufacturers, distributors and family companies in contract, partnership and ownership disputes, in court and at the negotiating table.

Background

Martin joined the firm in its second year and became firm chair in 2014. Before that he clerked for a judge of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas, an experience he credits for his habit of writing every brief for a busy reader.

He is known for early, candid case assessments. Clients often hear him say that the best litigation budget is the one spent in the first sixty days, when facts are fresh and options are still wide open.

Experience

Representative work, described without client names:

  • Trial counsel to a regional manufacturer in a multi-year supply agreement dispute
  • Lead counsel in a shareholder deadlock involving a third-generation family business
  • Arbitration counsel to a software company in a licensing disagreement with a national customer
  • Appellate counsel in a contract interpretation appeal before an Ohio district court of appeals

Community and teaching

Martin teaches a continuing education seminar on business dispute strategy and volunteers with a Columbus legal aid clinic.

  • Board member, a central Ohio nonprofit supporting first-generation business owners
  • Member, Columbus Bar Association business litigation committee
  • Guest lecturer on pretrial strategy at a local law school clinic

“They told us plainly where our contract was strong and where it was weak, before we spent a dollar on filing. That honesty is exactly why we trusted them with the rest of a very long dispute.”

“Clear updates, no jargon, and a written plan for every scenario we raised. I always knew what the next step was, who was handling it, and why it mattered to our business.”
