Your first court date after an arrest: what to expect

For most people, the first court date after an arrest is the arraignment. It is usually brief, often only a few minutes, but decisions made there can affect the rest of the case.

What happens at an arraignment

The judge confirms your identity, makes sure you have received the written charges and asks how you plead. In nearly every case, the plea entered at arraignment is not guilty, which preserves every defense while your lawyer reviews the evidence.

Release conditions

The court may also set or review conditions of release, such as bail, no-contact orders or a requirement to avoid alcohol. Following those conditions exactly is important, because a violation can create a new problem on top of the original charge.

How to prepare

Your first hearing is short, but walking in prepared changes how the rest of the case feels.

Arrive early, dress as you would for a job interview and bring any paperwork you received at the time of arrest. Do not discuss the facts of your case in the hallway or on social media. If you have not spoken with a lawyer yet, try to do so before the hearing. This article is general information for a demo site, not legal advice.
