Filler or relaxer? How to tell which one your lines need

Studio scene illustrating the article

Lines that appear when your face moves usually respond to a relaxer. Lines or hollows that stay when your face is still usually need filler, and many faces benefit from a little of both.

The mirror test

Stand in even light and look at the line that bothers you. Now relax your face completely. If the line mostly disappears at rest and returns when you frown, smile or raise your brows, it is a dynamic line caused by muscle movement. If it stays visible with your face relaxed, it is a static line or a sign of volume loss.

  • Frown lines and crow's feet are often dynamic early on
  • Folds beside the nose usually reflect midface volume loss
  • Deep forehead lines can be both

What each treatment does

A wrinkle relaxer quiets the muscle so it folds the skin less. It does not add anything. A hyaluronic acid filler adds soft volume under the skin to lift a fold, restore shape or support the cheek so the area below it looks smoother. Using filler to chase a moving line, or a relaxer to fix a hollow, tends to disappoint.

Treating the cause, not the crease, is what keeps results looking natural.

When both make sense

Deeply etched frown lines are a common example. A relaxer calms the muscle, and a tiny amount of soft filler can then smooth the crease that has already formed. We usually space the two a week or two apart so we can judge each one on its own.

Quick questions

Which is more expensive?

Relaxers cost less per visit but repeat more often. Filler costs more upfront and lasts longer, so yearly costs can be similar.

Can I have both on the same day?

Sometimes, but we often prefer to space them so swelling from filler does not hide how the relaxer is working.

Do either of these stop aging?

No. They soften specific signs, and results vary. Sunscreen and good skincare do the long-term work.
