Laser and light

Planning laser hair removal around a bright Arizona summer

Studio scene illustrating the article

Start a laser hair series in the fall. Tanned skin raises the risk of burns and pigment changes, so the cooler months give you room to finish most sessions before summer sun returns.

Why the calendar matters

Laser energy targets pigment. When the skin around a hair is tanned, it absorbs more of that energy, which can cause redness, blistering or patches of lighter or darker skin. In a place with as much sun as the Valley, protecting treated areas for two weeks on each side of a session is the single biggest factor in a smooth series.

  • No sunbathing or self-tanner on the area
  • Clothing and sunscreen on exposed spots
  • Tell us about any recent sun, even a weekend at the lake

A sample schedule

Most body areas need six to eight sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart. Starting in September or October lets you complete most of a leg or bikini series by April.

Between sessions

Shaving is fine and even helpful, because it keeps hair short without removing the root the laser needs. Waxing, plucking and threading should stop four weeks before your first session and stay stopped through the series.

Short, planned visits through the cool months make summer much simpler.

What if summer arrives mid-series?

Pause, protect the skin and pick the series back up in the fall. Missing a summer window does not undo the progress you have already made, though some regrowth may appear before you resume.

Quick questions

Can I treat my face in summer?

Sometimes, if you use strict sun protection and have not tanned. We decide visit by visit.

What about pool days?

Swimming is fine after 48 hours. Sunscreen and cover-ups on treated areas are the key.

How many sessions will I need?

Six to eight is typical, with occasional maintenance afterward. Results vary by hair and skin type.
