Hot stone massage
Smooth basalt stones, heated in water, are held along the spine and palms while your therapist uses more warm stones as an extension of their hands. The heat relaxes muscles quickly, so the massage can feel deep without heavy pressure.
We start with stones placed under the back and in the hands, then work through the whole body with long, warm strokes. Cool marble stones are used on the face at the end to bring you back gently.
It is our favourite winter treatment and a lovely choice for anyone who finds firm massage uncomfortable but still wants to feel the knots let go.
Why guests choose it
Our basalt stones are smooth river stones heated in water to a steady, comfortable temperature, never in an oven or microwave. Each one is checked against the therapist's own forearm first, then moved constantly so the warmth soaks in slowly and evenly instead of sitting in one spot.
Heat changes how a massage feels. Muscles soften faster, pressure feels deeper without hurting and the whole body relaxes more quickly, which is why hot stone is a favourite for anyone who finds firm massage too intense.
Before you arrive
Let us know when you book if you have circulation concerns, diabetes, recent sunburn or are pregnant, because heated stones are not right for everyone. We will suggest an equally relaxing alternative.
Arrive early enough to settle and change without hurrying. The stones need your muscles to be soft and your breathing slow to work their best.
Afterwards
You may feel pleasantly heavy and warm for an hour or two, so plan a quiet evening. Avoid alcohol and hot tubs for the rest of the day and drink plenty of water.
On colder days, wrap up well on the way home to keep that warmth in the muscles. Many regulars book hot stone once a season and a warm oil massage in between.
Heat that works for you
Basalt stones
Smooth stones hold heat evenly for the full session.
Long strokes
Warm stones glide along the muscles like an extra pair of hands.
Cool finish
Chilled marble on the face and brow to close the session.
Good to know
Stones are checked against your skin first and moved constantly. Tell us if anything feels too warm.
Yes, because the heat does the work, the pressure can stay light.
Many runners and climbers book it for exactly that. Leave a day after a hard session.
Skip it if you are pregnant, have circulation issues or recent sunburn. We will suggest a warm oil massage instead.
Yes. Book the facial second so your face is not pressed into the cradle after your skin has been treated.
Every stone is washed and sanitised after each session, then reheated in fresh water.
