Keeping short-nosed breeds cool through a Boise summer

Bulldogs, pugs and their cousins heat up fast. How to plan walks, carry water and spot overheating early.

Flat-faced dogs cannot cool themselves as well as other breeds, so walk them early or late, keep water close and stop at the first sign of heavy panting. Dry Boise heat makes it easy to underestimate how hot they get.

Why these breeds struggle

Dogs cool off mostly by panting. Short noses and narrow airways make that harder, so bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers and similar breeds heat up faster and recover more slowly.

Plan walks around the heat

Walk before eight in the morning or after the sun drops. Test the pavement with the back of your hand, keep walks short and take shade breaks often.

If you are warm in the shade, a short-nosed dog is already working hard to stay cool.

Know the warning signs

Loud, heavy panting, a bright red tongue, drooling, stumbling or vomiting are signs of overheating. Move your dog somewhere cool, offer water and call us during open hours.

Signs to watch for

  • Loud or heavy panting that will not ease
  • Bright red or purple tongue and gums
  • Thick drool or foamy saliva
  • Stumbling, weakness or collapse
  • Vomiting after time outside

Quick answers

Can I shave my dog to keep cool?

Usually not. A trim is fine, but a dog’s coat helps protect against sunburn and heat.

What if my dog overheats after hours?

Sponge your dog with lukewarm water rather than ice, then phone our line. The recorded message names the closest emergency hospital.
