Retreat stays

Twelve garden rooms sit along a stone path through the ferns, each with a low linen bed, a rattan reading chair and a window onto the trees. There are no televisions, the phone signal is patchy, and the only sound at night is water. A retreat stay includes unlimited time on the thermal circuit, breakfast by the spring, a morning movement class with Priya, and one treatment of your choice for every two nights. Guests arrive from 3 pm and are welcome to soak until the hall closes. Most tell us two nights is good and three is better.

Rest is the whole plan

We built the rooms small and warm on purpose, so the day happens outdoors and in the water. Each has a deep tub, a rain shower, a kettle and a shelf of well loved books. Breakfast is slow food from the kitchen garden, and dinner is served on the terrace from 6 pm. If you want a quieter stay, ask for one of the rooms at the far end of the path, where the ferns grow tallest.

Arrive on a Sunday or a Tuesday and the path is at its quietest. Many guests bring a book, leave the car in the lot for the whole stay and walk into Sallowmere for dinner one evening along the river trail.
