Caring Close to Home

Heathcote is a community-based provider supporting older adults and their families across Portland, with three communities and an in-home care team.

Who We Are Today

Heathcote runs three senior living communities and an in-home care service in the Portland metro area, with assisted living, apartment living, respite and recovery stays under one roof of values.

For more than thirty-five years we have grown slowly and on purpose, adding services only when the families we serve asked for them.

Our Approach

We start with the person, not the diagnosis or the room type. Every new resident and home care client sits down with us to talk about routines, likes and the parts of the day that matter most.

Care plans are written in plain words and reviewed at least every ninety days, or sooner whenever something changes.

We believe a good community feels a little like a good street: people greet each other, notice when someone is missing and pitch in.

We hire for warmth and train for skill, with every caregiver completing our own orientation and ongoing learning each year.

Our Beginnings

Heathcote started in 1987 when a group of neighbours in southeast Portland converted a large family home into a residence for six older adults who wanted to stay in the area they knew.

Alder Grove opened on that same street in 1996, Juniper Court followed in 2008 and Cedar Terrace welcomed its first apartment residents in 2021. Our in-home care team began in 2012.

We still answer to a volunteer board of directors made up of local residents, family members and professionals, and we still reinvest in our homes, our staff and our programs.

How we are run

Who Guides Heathcote?

Heathcote is governed by a volunteer board of directors drawn from the neighbourhoods we serve. There are no outside shareholders to answer to, so surplus funds go straight back into staff wages, building upkeep and the programs residents enjoy.

Our finances are reviewed by an independent auditor every year, and the summary is shared at our annual community meeting.

A Note From Our Director, Daniel Whitcombe

When families visit for the first time, I ask one question: what does a good day look like for the person you love? Our job is to protect those good days and to make changes with families rather than for them.

I have worked in senior living for twenty-two years and at Heathcote for nine. If you are weighing your options, come and have lunch with us. You will learn more in an hour at our tables than in any brochure.
