A checklist for planning a respite stay

A respite stay is a short, furnished stay in a senior living community, usually one to eight weeks, that gives a family caregiver a break while their loved one receives meals, activities and daily living support. Call about a month ahead, write down medications and routines, and pack for comfort, not for a move.

Before the stay
Call to check dates and suite availability, then schedule a short care assessment. The care team will ask about medications, mobility, diet, sleep and the little habits that keep a day on track. That conversation becomes the short-stay care plan, and you will see it before arrival.
Choose dates and confirm the suite.
A nurse reviews needs by phone or in person.
You approve the short-stay care plan.
Check in mid-morning so lunch is the first meal.
What to pack
Laundry is done weekly; label items with a name.
With a current list signed by the prescribing doctor.
A blanket, family photos, a radio, a favourite mug.
Doctor, pharmacy and an emergency contact for the stay.
Suites come with linens, towels, toiletries and a small refrigerator, so there is no need to bring furniture. Leave valuables and large sums of cash at home.
During and after
Guests take part in meals, classes and outings like any resident. Call the wing whenever you would like an update, or arrange a video call with the life enrichment team. At checkout you receive a short written summary of the stay: meals, activities, sleep and anything the care team noticed.
Caregivers often tell us the hardest part is making the first call. After the first stay, most book the next one before they leave.
