Chair yoga is a seated form of gentle stretching and breathing that almost anyone can try. Our new morning classes at all three communities have quickly become a calm, friendly start to the day.

What chair yoga involves

Each class uses a sturdy chair for support. Movements are slow and simple: lifting the arms, turning the shoulders, flexing the ankles and breathing deeply. Nothing should hurt, and every movement can be made smaller.

Three stretches to try at home

  1. Sit tall, breathe in and lift both arms slowly, then lower them as you breathe out
  2. Turn gently to look over one shoulder, then the other
  3. Lift one heel, then the other, as if walking in place

It is the quietest half hour of my day, and I sleep better on class days.
