Water exercise is one of the gentlest ways for older adults to stay active. Warm water supports your weight, eases pressure on knees and hips and lets you move more freely than on land, which is why our pool classes are among the most popular hours on the calendar.
Why the pool feels easier
When you stand in chest-deep water, it carries much of your body weight. That buoyancy lets residents walk, stretch and lift their arms with less strain, while the water itself offers soft resistance to every movement. Many residents who find a walk around the block tiring discover they can manage a full class in the pool.
What a class at Cedar Terrace looks like
Our therapy pool is heated to a comfortable temperature and has a gently sloping ramp and handrails on both sides. Classes last forty-five minutes and are led by an instructor who stays in the water with the group.
A typical session
- Ten minutes of slow walking and arm circles to warm up
- Twenty minutes of gentle strength work with foam weights
- Ten minutes of balance practice holding the rail
- Five minutes of slow stretches and breathing to finish
I had not been in a pool in thirty years. Now I am the first one in on Tuesday mornings.

Getting started safely
Before joining, residents meet our wellness coordinator to talk about any health concerns and decide which class fits. Non-slip shoes, a towel and a water bottle are all you need. Staff help anyone who would like assistance with the changing room or the ramp.
