Start early, start gently and listen more than you speak. The most helpful conversations about senior living are a series of small talks about what your parent wants, not a single big decision made in a hurry.

Choose the right moment

Pick a calm time at home, not a holiday dinner or a hospital corridor. Let your parent know you would like to talk about the future and ask when would suit them.

A simple way to begin

  1. Ask what a good day looks like for them now
  2. Ask what they would want if things became harder
  3. Share your own worries honestly and kindly
  4. Agree on one small next step together
