A family dentist in Plano, with one office for every age
Most of the people we see are adults: professionals setting up routine care, couples, and parents finally looking after their own teeth. Our office is on Custer Road, and one office can look after everyone in your household, at every age, with one set of records and one front desk. Each person's benefits are checked before the visit, and anything beyond routine care comes with a written, itemized quote before it is booked.
Three offices, three schedules, three sets of forms?
A lot of households end up with dental care scattered across town: one office for you, another for your partner, a third that took the insurance at the time. Each has its own forms, reminders and idea of when you were last seen.
The person doing the juggling is usually the one who falls off the calendar. Parents who spent years getting everyone else to the dentist often have not had their own cleaning in a while.
None of that needs fixing in one go. A first call sorts out who needs a visit, and you can start with yourself.
- “I book everyone else's appointments and skip my own”Start with your own exam. The rest of the household can follow when it suits you.
- “Nobody has our old X‑rays”Ask the old office to send what they have, and we take only the images each person needs.
- “Honestly, someone in the house is nervous about dentists”Tell us who, and we explain each step first, go at their pace and stop when they raise a hand.

What does a family dentist do?
A family dentist provides general dental care for every age in one practice: exams, cleanings, fillings, crowns, gum care and urgent visits. At Custerpoint Family Dental in Plano, most patients are adults setting up routine care or restoring teeth, and a whole household can share one office, one front desk and one set of records. Most people come back about every six months, and the same team looks after a first cleaning and, years later, a crown or an implant.

Who do we see at Custerpoint Family Dental?
Every age is welcome, so there is no candidacy test. Here is who fills the chairs on a typical weekday, and what any first visit includes.
Mostly adults, at every stage
- Adults setting up routine care after a move, or catching up after a few years away.
- Parents and grandparents planning restorative work, from crowns to implants and dentures, or wanting a second opinion on work they were told they need.
- The rest of the household, including kids and teens, when one office is simpler for you.
What every first visit includes
- A full exam and only the X‑rays that person needs
- Images explained on the chairside screen, in plain words
- Each person's PPO benefits checked before the visit
- A written plan, and a written, itemized quote for anything recommended

What does one office for every age change for your household?
The change is mostly practical: less paperwork, fewer trips and a team that knows your history. Results vary from person to person.
-
01
One set of records
Everyone's X‑rays, scans and history live in one place, so nobody repeats a form or an X‑ray.
-
02
Visits side by side
Two or three people can often be booked in the same block, so one trip covers several cleanings.
-
03
One insurance conversation
We check each person's benefits and file every claim, so the household's paperwork runs through one front desk.
-
04
Care that changes with you
Cleanings in your 30s, a crown in your 50s, implants or dentures later on: the same team handles most of it in-house, with your history on file.
-
05
Two dentists, one approach
Dr. Tam and Dr. Chiem share the same equipment and the same habit of explaining things on the screen before any work starts.
-
06
Care in Chinese, if you prefer
For households more comfortable in Chinese, visits can be held in Chinese; see our Chinese-speaking dentist page.
Back-to-back visits here, or separate offices: what changes?
There is nothing wrong with keeping a dentist you like. This is simply what tends to be different when a household shares one office.
| At a glance | Most asked aboutOne office, visits back to back | Option 2Separate offices for each person |
|---|---|---|
| Booking | One call, and we look for times that sit together on the same day | One call per office, and the calendars rarely line up |
| Records and X‑rays | One file per person, all in one place, so nothing is repeated | Each office keeps its own, and images are often taken again |
| Insurance | One front desk checks every plan and files every claim | Each office checks and files separately |
| Reminders | One reminder rhythm for the household | Several, on different schedules |
| When care gets bigger | The team that knows your history handles most crowns, implants and dentures in-house | A referral, and a new office to learn |
| If someone is nervous | The front desk knows, and the visit is paced for them | It has to be explained again at each office |

No surprisesNothing beyond routine care is booked until each person has a written quote and feels ready.
What does a family visit cost, and what does insurance cover?
Routine care is where insurance usually helps most. Many PPO plans cover preventive exams and cleanings with little or nothing out of pocket, and each adult may be on a different plan with a different yearly maximum. We check every plan before the visit, and restorative work is quoted in writing, person by person, before anything is scheduled.
What moves the number
- Each person's plan and the benefits left for the year
- Whether a visit is preventive only or includes treatment
- The X‑rays or scans needed at a first visit
- Any restorative work, such as fillings, crowns or implants, which is quoted separately
Good to knowLarger plans can be staged across two benefit years, starting with the person or the tooth that matters most, so the household is not paying for everything at once.

Anything beyond a routine visit comes with one written, itemized quote for the household, broken down per person, with what each plan is expected to pay.

Who looks after your household, and what do they use?
Dr. Tam and Dr. Chiem see every age, and the same on-site equipment serves every patient, from a first cleaning to a full restoration.
Dr. Larry TamGeneral dentist and ownerA Plano native and Texas A&M Baylor College of Dentistry graduate, caring for Dallas-area patients for more than ten years.
Dr. Johnny ChiemGeneral dentistYears of clinical experience and a gentle, compassionate approach; he walks you through your X‑rays on the screen before anything is decided. Most household visits are exams and cleanings, and nothing about them should hurt. For anything more, the area is numbed first, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. We go at your pace and stop whenever someone raises a hand.

- 01
iTero digital scanner
A handheld wand builds a 3D model of your teeth in minutes, so there is no goopy impression tray for crowns, aligners or night guards.
- 02
Low-radiation cone-beam CT
When a tooth, an implant site or a wisdom tooth needs a closer look, a 3D scan shows the roots, bone and nerves that flat X‑rays can overlap.
- 03
3D printing and same‑day crowns
We print models, provisionals and appliances in the office, and our Glidewell mill makes crowns here too. Most crowns are finished in one appointment.
- 04
Chairside screens
Every X‑ray and scan goes up on the screen beside the chair, so each person sees what the dentist sees before anything is recommended.
